The #1 Obstacle to Getting What You Want
Want to know the number one thing that gets in the way of our desires?
It’s not time.
It’s not money.
It’s not confusion about what we really want.
It’s not the phase of life that we’re in.
These are the things on the surface, for sure, but they aren’t usually what’s really going on. When I talk with people and help peel back the layers, it almost always comes down to this:
The reason we don’t honor the desires in our lives is because we don’t believe we’re worthy of them.
It never fails. When I’m talking with clients, This comes up every. single. time.
To be clear - I’m not in the camp of magical manifestation which posits that if you fully own your desires, the universe will deliver them to you. I’m a working mom of two little ones who’s grieving the death of her sister. There are no unicorns where I live.
And yet, I also know that when we tell ourselves that we don’t know what we want, or that we don’t have enough time or money for our desires, usually what’s happening deep down is that we know exactly what we want, but we’re terrified. Our desires are buried under shame, fear of failure and judgment, not wanting to disappoint anyone, or not believing that we’re worthy of something more.
And as long as those things are blocking the way, your brain is going to keep giving you reasons why your desires aren’t within the realm of possibility. (Enter: I don’t have enough time. I don’t know where to start. Maybe that’s not even what I really want.).
The good news? You can learn how to retrain your brain. You can learn how to peel back the layers and be in a different relationship with your shame and your fears. You can learn new skills and practices to keep you firmly planted in what matters most to you and to help you bring your desires into the light of day.
