Do They Like Me?
I’ve been looking for approval most of my life. The chatter in my head was an almost-constant barrage of “Am I good enough? Did I do it right? Do they like me?”
It was an exhausting and no-win way to live. I knew this. You know this.
So WHY did I keep doing it? Why do some of you? How do so many of us keep falling into this trap?
Conventional wisdom tells us that we shouldn’t care what people think. I get the sentiment behind that, but it is flawed. Humans are deeply social creatures; we are wired to be attuned with each other.
You know who doesn’t care what other people think? Psychopaths.
We can’t just flip a switch and care less. We don’t need to build up our armor or thicken our skins.
True freedom in ourselves is a process of UNDOING. It’s peeling away and shedding expectations. It’s understanding how we’ve been conditioned to abandon our true selves and knowing where our fears come from.
Next time you tell yourself, “I wish I didn’t care what other people think,” know that it’s okay that you do. You are designed that way.
Also know that there is a way to give less power to those voices and to reconnect to your own authority.
We can relearn how to trust ourselves and let our joy lead the way.
